Asbestos Removal in New Hope

A lower-level finish, a kitchen opening or a furnace swap in New Hope can disturb materials that need testing first. We book the inspection, take out what comes back positive and handle the notice to the state. Your contractor then picks up where we leave off.

Building peaked here in the 1960s, the decade behind about 4 in every 10 New Hope homes. Before 1980, more than 7 in every 10 had been built.

Testing first

Not sure what a material contains? Our asbestos testing page covers sampling for a single remodel and full surveys before a demolition.

Lower levels and kitchens

Lift a corner of that rec room carpet before you plan the new floor. Each layer under it gets its own sample, and floor tile and sheet vinyl removal covers the ones that test positive.

Textured ceilings

Taking out a wall between the kitchen and living room means cutting into the ceiling above it. Sample the texture before that day, and read popcorn ceiling removal if it comes back positive.

New Hope homes by decade

The median New Hope home was built in 1969. The 1970s added more than a fifth of today’s homes, while fewer than 1 in 20 date from before 1950.

Renters occupy close to half of New Hope’s homes. Buildings of five or more units hold a little over 4 in 10 homes, and one-unit homes make up just over half.

Homes from the 1960s and 1970s

In a house from either decade, we sample the MDH-listed materials your project will disturb, one room at a time, before anything is removed.

Apartment buildings

Over 4 in 10 New Hope homes sit in buildings large enough for MPCA’s rules. Owners of those buildings should expect ten working days between our notice to MPCA and the first regulated work.

Permits in New Hope

The city wants a permit before most construction work starts, and you can apply online or with a PDF form. Nothing on its permits page covers asbestos, which leaves that part of a New Hope project to the state rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can a landlord remove asbestos from a rental?

Not for a regulated amount. Close to half of New Hope’s homes are rented, and none of them qualify for the owner’s exemption, which covers only a single-family house its owner lives in. Regulated amounts there go to an MDH-licensed contractor.

What counts as a regulated amount?

Think of it as three tripwires for friable material in a house. Pipes trip it at more than 10 linear feet, any other surface at more than 6 square feet, and a pile you can’t measure in feet at more than 1 cubic foot. MDH does not call smaller amounts safe.

How much notice does removal need?

MDH needs the licensed contractor’s notice in hand five calendar days ahead. We file ours as soon as positive lab results come back, so the wait starts early.

Is a 1960s house sure to have asbestos?

Not necessarily. The decade a house was built points to which materials deserve a sample, and the lab report gives the answer for each one.
