Sheet vinyl
MPCA calls the paper backing on old sheet goods friable in most cases. That backing is why every strip we lift is misted, rolled tight and bagged while still damp.
Typical cost in Plymouth
Kitchens, baths, entries and lower levels can have sheet vinyl, floor tile or both, sometimes one laid over the other. MDH lists flooring and the adhesive under it among materials that may contain asbestos. A sample of every layer comes first, and only the positive layers are taken up, leaving a bare subfloor.
Floor tile and sheeting in homes lost their state exemption on July 1, 2021, and we take up positive layers in kitchens, baths and lower levels across Plymouth, New Hope and Wayzata.

We pry tiles loose by hand, one at a time, keeping them whole where they allow it. Grinders, sanders and chipping tools stay off the job because they turn tile into dust.
The glue left on the subfloor is sampled on its own. A clean result for the tile above it tells you nothing about the adhesive underneath.
A sound, undamaged old floor may simply get the new one laid on top, by MDH’s rules. Cracked or broken tile is another story, and there MDH strongly recommends licensed removal.
A few decisions made before we start shape how the floor work runs and which rooms you can keep using.
Tell us which room you need back first, such as the kitchen, and we plan the order of the work around it.
Newer flooring laid over old tile means more than one layer to sample and remove. We find out during testing, not halfway through.
Stains and soft spots from an old dishwasher or toilet leak are plain to see on a stripped subfloor. Your installer can price that repair up front instead of finding it on install day.
