Cement shingle siding
Panels are misted, unfastened and lowered by hand instead of being broken off. They are stacked on plastic and wrapped for the landfill.

Gray cement siding on an older rambler, or old shingles under a newer roof, can contain asbestos. MDH’s guidance is to leave sound material alone and repair damage with care. A re-side, an addition or a new roof changes that, and then we take the material off damp and in whole pieces.
Since July 1, 2021, siding and roofing on a home have followed the state’s asbestos rules, with no exemption. Our crews strip cement siding and old roofing layers from houses across Plymouth, New Hope and Wayzata.

MDH lists cement roofing shingles, asphalt shingles, roofing felt and underlayment among products found in Minnesota homes. We sample the layers your roofer will strip.
For an addition, we strip only the wall where the new framing ties in, and the rest of the house keeps its siding until you decide otherwise.
MDH says covering old siding with new material is sometimes possible. Before you plan on it, check what the local building code allows.
In MDH’s terms, sound cement siding is nonfriable, but weathering, heat, water and the removal itself can make it friable. That is why the way it comes off matters as much as whether it does.
MDH advises against breaking, sanding, cutting, drilling or sawing the material, since that can release fibers. We work panel by panel with hand tools.
We spread plastic along the foundation before the first panel comes off, so chips stay out of the lawn and the garden beds.
Paper-like vapor barriers can be friable. If one is behind your siding, it is sampled and handled as its own material.
